The already top notch cast of the Rock of Ages film adaptation got a little starrier over the weekend, with 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin officially signed on to play Dennis Dupree, an aging rocker turned owner of club The Bourbon Room in the ‘80s tuner. Film director Adam Shankman confirmed the earlier rumors of Baldwin’s involvement with an announcement via his Twitter: “So, based on info I got today, I’m gonna confirm Alec Baldwin as Dennis in Rock Of Ages. Hollah.”
Baldwin joins the already confirmed Tom Cruise as over-the-top rocker Stacee Jaxx, Julianne Hough as leading lady Sherrie and Mary J. Blige as strip club owner Justice. Still unconfirmed is Russell Brand as Dupree’s right hand man Lonny, who would duet with Baldwin on the REO Speedwagon hit “I Can’t Fight This Feeling.” Also circling the project is recent Oscar co-host and soon-to-be Glee guest star Anne Hathaway, who is said to be considering the role of an uptight journalist hell-bent on writing a Stacee Jaxx expose.
Rock of Ages is set in 1987 on the Sunset Strip, where a small town girl (Hough) meets a big city rocker in L.A.’s most famous rock club The Bourbon Room. Their love story is told through the hits of Journey, Bon Jovi, Styx, Pat Benatar, Foreigner, Twisted Sister, Asia, Whitesnake and many more. The Broadway musical, which is currently on hiatus until March 24 when it will re-open at the Helen Hayes Theatre, received five Tony nominations (including Best Musical) after opening on April 7, 2009. The movie version is expected to begin filming in Florida on May 19 and be released in 2012.
